Am 28. Juni 1942 beginnt im Südabschnitt der Ostfront die große deutsche Sommeroffensive „Fall Blau". Die Ziele sind die Eroberung des Kaukasus und der sowjetischen Ölfelder. Vom ersten Moment an dabei ist das Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 40 der 24. Panzer-Division. Kurz zuvor wurde es in Frankreich neu motorisiert und wird im Mai nach Kursk in das Operationsgebiet der Heeresgruppe Süd verlegt. Ostwärts Kursk beginnt für das Bataillon unter dem Kommando der 4. Panzerarmee die Offensive. Im Verband mit dem Panzer-Regiment 24 ist das Bataillon immer an der Spitze im Einsatz.
Bereits Anfang Juli wird der Don erstmals überschritten, die Stadt Woronesh fast vollständig eingenommen. Direkt im Anschluss erfolgt der neue Auftrag: zurück über den Don und Vorstoß in den Großen Donbogen. Hier operieren 6. Armee und 4.Panzerarmee gemeinsam, es folgt Ende Juli / Anfang August die siegreiche Kesselschlacht bei Kalatsch. Damit verbunden ist auch die entscheidende Änderung der Planung der Sommeroffensive. Das neue Ziel: die Eroberung von Stalingrad. Erneut überschreitet das Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 40 gemeinsam mit der 24.Panzer-Division den Don und stößt in die Kalmückensteppe in Richtung Stalingrad vor. Von hier aus beginnt Anfang September der Angriff auf den Süden Stalingrads. Bereits jetzt sind die Verluste der Division enorm. Dieser Bildband zeigt in über 200 bislang unveröffentlichten Fotos eines Panzer-Pioniers den gesamten Marschweg des Bataillons von Juni bis September 1942.
